In the city where an unfinished skyscraper has become a destination for urban explorers and an abandoned mall has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, the Muslim descendent weavers live in the heart of Bangkok. Considering the land ownership and flood issues in Bangkok, the Silk City aims to allow the community to weave into the fabric of the city to create their land around and above the surrounding abandoned buildings by using their silk-making process.
In this project, I looked into Bangkok's abandoned buildings and abandoned communities. I wanted to create a city of silk woven by the hands of Muslim weavers who once thrived on their land with Jim Thomson before he went missing and the mass production silk factories took over their jobs. I aimed to rekindle life and provide opportunities for the people in the slum. I imagined ‘what could have been if… the community, the silk community, can create a new platform above and the inflatable bags can lift the entire silk landscape.’
